The Christian Year (Church Year)
Rehearsing the Story of Scripture through the Church Calendar
From ancient times, the Church has centered its faith and life in the canonical story of the Bible, culminating in Jesus. The Cycle of Light (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany) focuses on the incarnation, while the Cycle of Life (Lent, Eastertide, Pentecost) focuses Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, and ascension. At Pentecost, the Church celebrates the coming and ministry of the Holy Spirit, and at Trinity Sunday God’s working throughout the ages. The Church Year ends with two feasts (All Saints Day and the Reign of Christ the King), which look to our Lord’s final victory at his Second Coming. This story, told and retold, is the heart of Christian spiritual formation.
