The Harvest is Great, But the Laborers Few
During the Season after Pentecost we engage in mission to the world.
The risen and exalted Christ has given his people the commission to
make disciples of all nations, to spread the Gospel of salvation to the
ends of the earth. In Matthew 9.37-38 Jesus said to his disciples,
"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech
the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest." He
exhorted them to lift up their eyes and simply look of the fields of
harvest, the teeming millions of the nations who need to know of God's
grace in the Son of God. The harvest is ripe, and the fields are
white; the peoples of the world are truly ready for harvest (John
4.34-35).

In their latest book on the church entitled Pagan Christianity,
Frank Viola and George Barna make a plea for a return to the first
century church as the most viable and natural sense of Church, and
accuse the current institutional church of paganism. They argue:
"The practices of the first century church were the natural and
spontaneous express of the divine life that indwelt the early
Christians. And those practices were solidly grounded in the timeless
principles and teachings of the New Testament. By contrast, a great
number of the practices in many contemporary churches are in conflict
with those biblical principles and teachings. When we dig deeper, we
are compelled to ask: Where did the practices of the contemporary
church come from? The answer is disturbing . . .
