Create in Me a Clean Heart Psalm 51.1-17
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten journey, as we walk together as disciples on our way to the cross. We start this path on a road to share the lowliness of the Lord, the one who set his face to go to Jerusalem, and offered himself as a sacrifice for the sins of all humankind. As pilgrims on this journey, we now pledge to walk the next forty days in openness, confession, and in generosity for his name’s sake.
Psalm 51 reveals David’s contrition and humility after being confronted by the prophet Nathan for his sin with Bathsheba. Let our hearts cry out for mercy to God, according to his steadfast love and abundant mercy. Let us petition the Lord to blot out our transgressions, to wash us thoroughly from our iniquities, and to cleanse us from our sins. He knows our transgression, and our sins are before us. Against him alone have we sinned and done evil. The Lord is righteous in all his indictments against us.
Let us together flatly confess the truth: we were brought forth in error and conceived in sin. The Lord delights in truth in the inward being, the place where he teaches us wisdom in the secret heart. He can purge us and wash us, and we will be clean, whiter than snow. Let us pray with petitions for joy and gladness, that he might hide his face from our sins and blot out our iniquities. He alone can create in us a clean heart, and fill us with his Spirit. He alone can deliver, and, if he does, our souls will be set free and our joy will be restored. May this Lenten journey touch us deeply, causing us to repent from any sinful ways and rededicating ourselves to the Lord.
